United States, June 2020

With its presidential election approaching, the US is currently an illiberal state. No one can tell, of course, what may happen on the electoral trail nor what the electoral outcome is going to be. But, at the present stage of uncertainty and consternation, here are five takeaways from my comparative work on populism and democracy in Europe and Latin America, and how they apply to contemporary American realities. The US isn’t a different planet, and there’s plenty of historical experience with populism out there for its leaders, politicians, academics and other public intellectuals to draw valuable lessons from. But, please, do it before it’s too late.
