A BID FOR POLITICAL SANITY
The first time I heard about Pete Buttigieg was when he submitted his candidacy for the 2020 US presidential race in April 2019. Who was this guy?
At the time, I was expecting my book on Populism and Liberal Democracy to come out and working on some fresh ideas about how to combat populism. Almost instinctively, from the little I learned about him, Buttigieg’s profile seemed to fit my thinking perfectly well and I instantaneously felt that, if someone were to beat Trump in the 2020 contest, that would be him. [I know, that’s a big if, right?]
Anyway, a few days later in the same month of April I dared the following post:
Since then, I have been following Buttigieg’s campaign. And the more I learned (and keep learning) about him, the more convinced I become that he’s the most reliable liberal candidate to beat Trump and his populism. Quod erat demonstrandum, of course.
As long as he remains in the race and unless a better candidate emerges, this blog will be supporting Pete Buttigieg.
By the way, “Buttigieg” is pronounced BOOT-edge-edge.
